The Marketing Students Mentorship Programme

ISSUE STATEMENT
Currently, the up take of the marketing degree is multiply challenged by misconstrued perceptions such as;
Marketing is: ‘hawking’, ‘unprofessional, thus requiring no special training’, ‘not a challenging enough field’, ‘too theoretical and limited in practise’

VISION
To encourage the marketer at university level to confidently take up marketing as a profession and pursue it with excellence through interacting with those of like mind and learning from those with proficiency in the field.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

METHOD

  • A select group of youth are taken through 8 face to face mentorship and coaching sessions
  • The face to face sessions are structured to ensure the mentees get a full understanding on the basic work skills and competencies (for career and work)
  • Caters for practical sessions to ensure that learning is more effective and it takes root.
  • Increases self confidence
  • Grows self awareness
  • Clarifies career direction
  • Develops skill & knowledge
  • Helps avoid making preventable mistakes
  • Broadens understanding of organizations internal & external environment
  • Broadens networks & reduces isolation
  • Increases ability to perform in current /future role
Group composition 3rd and 4th year MSK student members (marketing majors)
Group size Maximum 30 participants
Duration of course (Cost) 8 sessions/lesson (Ksh. 1500)
Length of meetings 2 session/lessons per day (1 month – 4 Saturdays)
Recognition Ceremonial graduation at the end, where certificates are awarded to those who successfully completed the program (90% attendance threshold)
Hand-outs Participants will be given material on google doc’s

Session 9 One on one session with mentors selected by MSK
– The mentee has a 2 hour session with a mentor

Once the coaching session are complete, MSK will seek to get the TEN BEST STUDENTS internships at various organisations;

  • Duration – 2 to 3 months internships
  • Monthly allowance of Kshs 25,000 – 30,000
  • MSK to work with each corporate to develop an internship programme that ensure that the interns get a good experience
